“Commoning with Children in the fringes of Cities”

Project presentation and discussion

We will invite CUS researchers to show the project, discuss about the topic and meet with the local professionals from the Gemeente Almere and the local community, including the involved children and their families. We will show the drawings of children, the video of the project and discuss the results that we analysed through an object analysis in the mode of the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA).

A 3’ minutes walk through the park and the neighbourhood will bring you to the local community atelier where the children built their own part of the art installation with a local artist/art teacher. There will be tea, coffee and cookies.  

The project: The goal of the project has been to explore children’s perception and experience of urban commons. To this end, the involved children analysed the public spaces in their neighbourhood and collectively experiment ways of opening up those spaces to meet their needs and desires. A series of walk-along discussions and art workshops with children and a local artist/art teacher unpacked children perception of the urban environment: emotional safety; perception of public and private uses; needs and desires. The production of a temporary art installation and the experiment in a selected public space aimed to foster children’s sense of belonging and ownership of the space.  

The process is in partnership with the Gemeente Almere and four primary schools in Almere Poort.

We will also introduce our next project with youth between Almere, New York and Johannesburg for which we won the Isaac Roet Prize.
