This year, the Centre for Urban Studies will award a 10.000 euro Visiting Scholar Grant, to be used in 2021. The Visiting Scholar Grant aims at stimulating new, innovative and collaborative research and initiatives.

Aims and criteria

This year, the Centre for Urban Studies will award a 10.000 euro Visiting Scholar Grant, to be used in 2021. The Visiting Scholar Grant aims at stimulating new, innovative and collaborative research and initiatives. Hereby, this program goes beyond the existing formats supporting short international visits for participation in public lectures, PhD-workshops, and/or research seminars (which will all still remain possible with this grant). The primary aim of the visit should be engaging with CUS researchers and students, not carrying out own research, or own writing (it is not a mini-sabbatical).

This grant provides one scholar funding for a stay of 6 weeks to 3 months in 2021. The grant will first and foremost cover travel and living expenses. Additional to financing the visit, the Centre for Urban Studies will support and facilitate the logistics and communications concerning the scientific activities of the visitor.

This grant will be competitively awarded based on an application by two or three CUS members, including the following:

  • CV of the visiting scholar
  • Explanation of how the research focus of the visiting scholar matches the orientation of the Centre for Urban Studies
  • Contributions to be made during the visit (examples are: a lecture series, joint research proposal, essay on Amsterdam or a reflection on the Centre for Urban Studies, a teaching contribution). This package should be developed together by the visiting scholar and the CUS members sponsoring the visit.
  • The overall strategic benefits and the collaborative nature of hosting the visiting scholar

Who can apply

Only CUS members can apply for this grant. The application needs to be done by the members of two different CUS program groups, who will formally submit the application (not the visiting scholar). A CUS member can only sponsor one (senior) visiting scholar. The CUS members will also act as hosts during the visit. The hosts will be the link between the CUS staff and the visitor, and be responsible for sorting out the administrative aspects of the visit, in collaboration with their department (e.g. registration of the visitor at the department, ensuring there is office space available, helping the search for housing).

How to apply

To be considered, please send an application of max. 750 words (excluding CV of the visiting scholar) to: urbanstudies@uva.nl before 12 June 2020.

Selection process

The director and coordinator of CUS will assess the applications against the above criteria but ask the Executive and Advisory Boards to approve the decision.

This grant is launched during the Covid-19 crisis. Dutch universities are currently closed and globally travel restrictions apply. We sincerely hope that in 2021, the CUS will be able to welcome a visiting scholar. We will keep the applicants updated.
