  • Profile

I am a spatial demographer, working as a Professor by special appointment at the Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies (GPIO) at the University of Amsterdam. I also work at the Netherlands Environmental Assesment Agency in the Haque (or the Dutch name PBL Planbureau voor de leefomgeving).

My research focusses on the question how population dynamics affect living environment domains. Topics are the impact of ageing on housing demand, population flows into and out of cities, residential patterns or segregation. Also, I study how changes in individual life courses of  influence spatial individual behaviour. Topics are the impact of different life events (union formation or dissolution, leaving the parental home, family formation, job and income changes) affect residential mobility or car mobility. I studied how the prolonged period between young people leaving their parental home and the time the start their own family affect spatial development, such as in the degree of urban growth and in the decline in car use among young adults. The relationship between other demographic life course events (such as divorce) and car mobility is another example. Very recently, I am developing a new research programme on the relationship of international migration and the daily life environment. In the next coming years, I will be studying individual life course patterns of immigrants after settling down in the Netherlands.
