Richard is Professor of Housing and Chair of Political and Economic Geographies at the University of Amsterdam. His research focuses on housing processes as a driver of social, economic and urban transformations in Europe and Pacific Asia. He is currently Editor of Palgrave Macmillan's 'Contemporary City' book series and Chairs the board of the 'International Journal of Housing Policy' (where he was formerly Editor-in-Chief). After graduating from Nottingham Univeristy and Nottingham Trent Univeristy (UK) in the 1990s, Richard became Doctorate and then Postdoctoral Fellow at Kobe University (Japan) in the early 2000s before moving to TU Delft (Netherlands) in 2006 and then the University of Amsterdam in 2010, becoming full Professor in 2017 and Chair in 2021. He is also currenlty Adjunct Professor at the Australian Centre for Housing Research at the University of Adelaide in South Australia, and was recently Distinguished Professor at Hong Kong Metropolitan University. He has previously held visiting Professorships at the University of Birmingham (UK), National University (Singapore) and Kyung Hee University (South Korea). His 2008 monograph, 'The Ideology of Home Ownership', is one of the most cited in the field of Housing Studies. His most recent book (2023) is titled 'Families, Housing and Property Wealth in a Neoliberal World'.
Richard Ronald is the former director of the Research Masters in Urban Studies and the Urban Studies Summer Programme. He contributes to various Master's and Bachelor's programmes in Social Geography and Urban Planning. He has previously lectured in Social Policy at the University of Birmingham, UK, on Contemporary Japan at the University of Leiden (Netherlands) and on Housing and Urban Studies in the Faculty of Architecture at TU Delft (Netherlands). Richard has also taught at Nottingham Trent University, the Open University and the Worker's Educational Association in the UK.
